The story behind this 2022 painting:

This painting is part of my Lemur series, which follows the adventures of a group of well-meaning, but mischievous lemurs. The lemurs are not delinquent per se, but they do not hesitate to take matters into their own little paws when faced with injustice.

"Sailing the high seas" was born out of a period in my life when several people close to me were facing various levels of harassment in the workplace. At the time, I had an idea for a painting depicting a lemur operating an airship (a sort of dirigible Nautilus shell, to be precise). I had the image in my head for awhile, but was not sure what the said lemur was up to. Then one night I was reminded of a kooky incident that happened a few years ago: on a former colleague's last day at work, someone set fire to the company's underground parking lot. No one, except for the empty company car, got injured, and the feat was jokingly attributed to the colleague whom we all knew left in a... shall we say, irregular manner.

The Lemur's story is that of fighting back: after months of harassment by the management and intimidation by the HR department, the Lemur has had enough. One evening, after everyone had gone home, the Lemur set the office building ablaze. She then commandeered the fire department's airship, putting her signature graffiti tag over the firefighters' sign, watched the loathed walls go up in flames, before letting go and setting sail for her new adventure.

About the Artist

Olga is a painter who draws inspiration from the fantastical worlds living inside her head: whether it is a parallel universe where the sapient life descended from dinosaurs rather than apes, or a land inhabited by mischievous lemurs, each artwork's characters come with their own story to tell.

Olga lives and works in her home in Paris, France that she shares with two furry assistants, of feline and canine variety.
